A moment alone... (TRP drabble)
Apr. 11th, 2021 09:21 pmIt was strange... Padme was in her past, preparing to leave and go to a foreign time and place to save a people she'd never even heard of. Yet, she wasn't afraid. Her father would be so proud of her. Their trips to bring relief aid to struggling worlds had trained her well for this moment. Though nothing could have prepared her for doing it while caring for two beautiful children.
"Ms. Padme, would you like me to take the children so you can rest?" The Jedi Healer smiled kindly at her, gesturing to the twins sleeping in their cradle.
She smiled, shaking her head. "No, thank you. I appreciate the offer. I'll send if I need any assistance." The Healer nodded and took their leave. She truly appreciated their help, but she wanted some time alone with her children before they started the next step in their journey.
Everything had been such a whirlwind since she arrived on Coruscant. Learning, meeting people, helping others... she hadn't given herself time to just sit and think, concerned about what that might bring. Since the twins had been born, she'd been surrounded by people. The Healers, Master Fae, visitors, Obi-Wan... Obi-Wan. She sat down on the edge of her bed, looking out the window. There was something different about him. And how he doted on the children, as if he was already so worried for their safety. There was nothing to fear here. Perhaps it had something to do with what he told her when she arrived.
Her mind wandered to the person she'd been trying so hard not to think of. "Anakin..." She whispered. Her heart broke all over again. Lost... he'd been lost to the Dark Side. She couldn't believe it, but Obi-Wan wouldn't lie to her. Not about that. Certainly, he'd told her as much before she left for Mustafar, but now... now he said it with such certainty, such finality. When with others, she kept on one of the many masks she'd crafted in her years as Senator. But now... She was alone and let it all fall away. She crumbled, dropping her face into her hands and weeping. She cried for herself, for her children, and for Obi-Wan. He must be struggling, too. They'd been so close, after all.
One of the children stirred and she sat up, gently wiping the tears from her eyes. Standing, she crossed to the cradle and looked down. "Luke... what are you doing, you should be sleeping?" She gently picked him up and sat down in the chair next to the cradle. Holding him in her arms, she brushed her fingers down his cheek. "You look so much like your father." Leia stirred, and she reached over to touch her daughter, to comfort her. "He was a good man. One of the best men I've ever known. He would have loved both of you so much." A tear slid down her cheek, "But sometimes... sometimes people make bad decisions and people get hurt as a result. I'm so sorry, my loves, that you'll never be able to meet the wonderful man I married."
She sniffles a little, feeling less like a Senator and more like the little girl on Naboo who just wanted to help people. When had it all gone so wrong? She decided then and there that this was the last time she would feel sorry for herself about all of this. There were things more important than her, and she wouldn't let her own problems get in the way of that. Resolved, she let the tears fall, humming an old lullaby as she rocked Luke back to sleep.
